“I’m here to learn!”

I am attending Club Industry at McCormick place in Chicago this week to learn from some of the best in the industry. Looking forward to sharing their insights in the coming weeks and months as I implement any of their great ideas!SergioRojasandMichelleBlakely2013

Photo: Sergio Rojas and Michelle Blakely at Club Industry 2013. Sergio is the fitness expert for NBC5 news in Chicago, a regular contributor for Men’s Fitness Magazine and former Executive Director of the President’s Council on Physical Fitness & Sports. Excellent presentation and outstanding fitness professional – it was an honor to hear his talk.

PS Did anyone catch the Billy Madison reference? Anyone?

Your Lean In Photo Please

Last week, many of you responded to my blog, post and tweet about Lean In: Women, Work and the Will to Lead. I’d love to hear more from you. Please post “why I lean in” and a photo of your “lean in” here, on our Facebook page or reply to our tweet. Friends that might like this? Spread the word – the more the merrier.LeanInMichelleBlakely

My reason? “For my daughters, that they might have fewer hurdles in the future.”

Adversity

What an honor! I had the distinct pleasure of listening to Captain Charlie Plumb’s presentation this weekend in Boca Rotan, Florida. A former Navy fighter pilot and Vietnam P.O.W., his beautifully crafted speech inspired each of us to re-evaluate our mental prisons and choose the right attitude for success. My favorite quote from his speech?

“Adversity is a horrible thing to waste.”

Not only is he an American hero, he is a terribly funny and nice person. Took the time to take a picture with me. With no one around to take the photo, he asked if I had long arms. My reply, “like an ape.” We leaned in close and grabbed this great shot.

Thank you, Captain Plumb!

Support through Success and Struggles

I just finished Sheryl Sanberg’s book, Lean In: Women, Work and the Will to Lead. It exposed me to my new favorite quote by Madeleine Albright:
“There is a special place in hell for women who don’t help other women.”

I hope you receive the help you deserve this week and help others that need your assistance. Healthy living is work. We must support ourselves and each other through both our successes and failures. We can absolutely create a healthier life for ourselves and our communities, supporting each other is an essential part of the process. Reach out anytime if there is a way Blakely Fit can help you. train@blakelyfit.com

Healthy? Maybe. Fun? Definitely.

A few girlfriends and I celebrated a 40th birthday at King Spa and Sauna in Niles, IL. I highly recommend it. It is a unique, international and visceral experience. This enormous facility has same gender pools (no swimsuits ladies), saunas, heat rooms, communal relaxation, nap room, meditation room, body treatments, fresh food and a movie theater. Take a look at the website here! Enjoy!
