How Will You Wage Your War?

WageWarBlakelyFITA client has declared war.

Not as a political activist of angry consumer, as a woman holding to her faith in her ability to beat a deadly disease.

Recent visits to her doctors indicate she is hurtling toward a diabetes diagnosis. As a physician’s daughter, she is well versed in the overwhelming implications of this disease. By my account, she was, at first, shocked and understandably upset. Having to face something so life altering is never a mountain any of us would chose to climb. And then, there was a change. A powerful shift. She decided to fight. She threw out old habits and rationalizations and started embracing the advice of experts that believed she could dodge this diagnosis.

And, we’re seeing progress. I am elated to announce that she had dropped her BMI (body mass index). Her internist is thoroughly impressed. So often we turn to a pill to solve our health problems with out first making a concerted effort to address our lifestyle. I am so very proud of this woman and hope her fight and one battle won might encourage you to wage your own war and win.

Blakely FIT on Oprah.com

MichelleBlakelyBlakelyFITOprahCom

I love talking about fitness solutions for women so it was a joy to be interviewed by Oprah.com Health Editor, Emma Haak. We talked tricks and tips and actually stumbled upon a few ideas for another article. (Fingers crossed.)

It’s an honor to be included on such a popular site along such reputable trainers.
I hope you’ll smile at my advice and share or like.

Many thanks!

Pretty Cool

BlakelyFITTraining01How cool is this! I just received this email from a reader…

“Michelle,

Last week I read your article on being kind to your future self in the Frankfort Station. I want to thank you, as I have been putting off my doctors advice to get a pap, mammo, and bone density check. I will be 71 on my next birthday, and I feel fine, but when you mentioned putting off making a doctor’s appointment, then facing a tougher diagnosis 12 months from now, it made me think. I don’t want a tougher diagnosis 12 months from now. I want a clean bill of health NOW. Thanks for the push I needed. You are a treasure to those of us out here.
Keep up the good work,
Rosemary

P.S. I will keep the article in case I get any other hair-brained ideas.”

Wow. Thank you for making the time to share this with me and thank you for taking proactive steps to ensure your good health status stays. It inspires all of us.

Hope it inspires you too! #strength #futureself #fridayquickie #bfit

My Bank Account

BlakelyFITPrisonWindow“Two men looked out from prison bars,

One saw the mud, the other saw stars.”

– Dale Carnegie

I’m pretty conservative when it comes to money. As a result, I was more than confused when I popped by an ATM for $80 dollars and the machine popped back  “insufficient funds.” Excuse me? I’m sure I have plenty in that account. To my dismay, nope, I did not. In fact, I had only $26.24 to be exact.

The mental simmer began… What was I mischarged for? What had I overlooked? Was someone tampering with my account? No, no and no. Realizing I didn’t have time to get upset, I paused the simmer and thought, “oh, this is a gift.”

This is information that I needed (bank account is low)

that I didn’t know I needed (thought the account was fine)

and now I can fix it (transfer money into the account so I don’t overdraw.)

Clients went through Reassessments this past week. The results are overall, outstanding. I am insanely proud of every single one of my clients. Every one. However, of the roughly fifty items we measure there are nearly always some setbacks for some women. Juggling healthy living is challenging. For clients and readers in the camp of “success is feeling elusive” or “I’m not getting healthier as quickly as I want,” I empathize with your struggle and then, implore you to see the opportunity. See that $26.24 balance as a positive.

Learning that things are not working is an OPPORTUNITY to fix it as long as we don’t get stuck in the dread or self-beratement. If we can pause the emotions long enough to clarify why we are stuck or sliding there is a tremendous turning point just up ahead. So for any of you out there experiencing frustration with healthy living, identify what isn’t working or often just as important what you are up against (demanding work schedule, new stressors, pressing life events) and then, be kind in developing a new plan.

Getting stuck in the disappointment of not being where we want to be is not a very useful or happy place. Consider the blessing of a little bad news, it can often take us to much better place in the end, if we let it.

Dirty Little Secret

Shhh ImageThere is something my industry is generally ignoring. And it is unfortunately, to your detriment. First, let’s acknowledge what we aren’t missing?

Stuff.

You can throw a rock in any direction and hit a trainer, gym or studio, new workout idea, piece of equipment, app, or recipe, new suggestion for how to cut calories or how to burn them. Membership options, fitness cultures, gym reinventions, experts and how to live healthfully research abounds.

What is missing you ask? What is the secret that I have witnessed in ALL of my successful clients? Well, it’s not me, it’s not a gadget, it’s not a diet or workout trick (although the quality of your information matters), it’s something inside the client. It’s the most important thing they have in their possession.
You have it too.

It’s your attitude.

So, I am aware there are some colossal eye rolls happening by a significant portion of my beautiful readers right now. Don’t hurt yourself. Bear with me.

Let’s think it through. Do you really believe you can succeed in living healthfully? Do you really want to be healthy? Do you feel you deserve a healthy, happy body? Because here’s the thing, if you don’t feel it and believe it – that giant brain of yours will find a way to sabotage. Your attitude and belief are your greatest asset and your greatest adversary. I have seen it, year in and year out. It is painful to bear witness but I’d like to save you that struggle and suggest you take a minute to evaluate your own attitude.

Too few, in my opinion are discussing the secret to success I have had the honor of witnessing for 13 years. Your attitude is more important than any app, trend or trainer. So, grab that power and ride it to a successful journey that ends with you in a happier, healthier, fitter place.

You can do this. I’m rooting for you.

GO OUTDOORS! (smile)

Ten minute walk, swim in the lake, paddle boat excursion, walk through the small town your visiting or quick jog on a trail –  find any excuse to get outdoors (might be best to go alone ;)) and fill that beautiful body of yours with feel good hormones and movement.  Independence is a good thing – give yourself some.

Gratitude on the Fourth

Happy Fourth of July everyone!

AmericanFlag
I am overwhelmed with gratitude as I reflect on this celebration of independence, freedom and all things great and worthwhile about our country. I am a woman, mother, wife and small business owner. As imperfect as our young country may be, being a U.S. citizen has afforded me the opportunity to build a business of my own accord providing a valuable service for my clients and income for my young family.

None of it would be possible with out the readership, social media support and patronage of you, my clients and readers. My utmost thanks for your support, feedback and trust.

I wish you and yours a wonderful holiday together and a moment of reflection for the freedom and independence we each hold dear.

Dinner Troubles? My new hero…

Last day of school, crazy week professionally and personally, gorgeous weather demanding time outside, oh, and everyone expects dinner on the table at 6. Eeek! What to do?

Meet my new hero – filling and delicious, fortified with fiber and superfoods, dinner is saved…
Spinach Enchilada Vegetarian Bake

BlakelyFITEnchDinnerStep10

You’ll need:

Large container of baby spinach
2 cans garbanzo beans
1 can black beans
1 can pinto beans
2 cups cooked brown rice (instant is fine)
1 corn tortilla (there’s one in the bottom of your fridge somewhere)
3/4 of a large can of mild enchilada sauce
1 small bag of shredded organic Mexican blend cheese

First, tear tortilla into one inch pieces and spread over bottom of glass pan.

Next, layer rice over tortilla pieces.

Then, use your food processor to chop all of the spinach in batches (or chop by hand if you have the time.) Layer that.

Enjoy with homemade guacamole (mashed avocado, garlic, cliantro) and a few chips!

Whew. That was easy!

Did you celebrate that?

IMG_9855A client and I were talking about her “last minute” efforts (6 weeks to the final fitting) to feel as healthy and fit as possible before her wedding. In our discussion, I encouraged her to take stock of all that she’s accomplished thus far.

The results were impressive:

“I feel so much better.”

“I definitely am healthier. I used to take antibiotics twice a winter for sinus infections, this year – none.”

“My clothes are fitting better.”

“I realized I do look better.”

How often do you take stock and celebrate what you’ve accomplished? Not nearly enough? I hear you. It’s so easy to get caught up in the bustle of what needs to be done and gloss over the importance of celebrating our hard work.

My husband and I celebrated our ten year anniversary this month. A simple dinner alone provided some precious time to revel in and acknowledge all that we have been through, enjoyed and surprised by over the last decade. That simple conversation was gift.

Make a date to celebrate yourself and all your healthy living efforts. There is power in acknowledging our accomplishments and that kind of power is a beautiful gift that keeps on giving.
